How are ceramics made? The ceramic mixture is made with clay, earthen elements, powders, and water. The mixture is shaped or molded into a shape (like a mug!) and then fired in a high temperature oven, or kiln. This is called the first firing. The ceramic piece is then finished with a waterproof glaze and put back in the kiln for a glaze firing.
